Getting Ready For Summer Reading/Preparemonos para Leer en lasVacaciones

It is never too early to start thinking about ways to keep your kids reading over the summer.  Studies show that students who read at least 4-5 books over the summer, maintain their progress in reading, and don't  slide behind before their next school year starts.  Even though it can be hard for students, who have worked hard all year, to think of reading each glorious summer day. However, make it a fun part of the daily routine, involve them in some fun summer reading programs and let them chose books that they might not get to read during the school year (comic books, magazines, plays, graphic novels, poetry, travel brochures)--it is possible to have fun and work on reading skills at the same time!

Each week until school gets out, I will be posting summer reading resources.  Today I am highlighting the Summer Reading program offered at Mira Costa College.  How important will your child feel taking a reading class on a college campus!  Wow!  These classes are geared towards your child's grade level skills and reading levels.  Follow this link for information, pricing and class times.

Learn and Earn!

Click here for an offer from Scholastic and Kumon where your child can earn some free books.  Quatities are limited, so act quickly.

Scholatic has partnered with Kumon to offer free books for students who fill out a reading log and do a math and/or a reading worksheet.  You must download the forms here (or send your student to Mrs. Mocny for help printing out forms).  You can mail them on your own, or students can bring them to my room (E-3) for help with filling in the forms, getting envelopes and stamps.  Good luck!
