Open Enrollment School of Choice (SOC) For the 2018-19 School Year Green Zone: January 8, 2018 – March 30, 2018

The Oceanside Unified School District Board of Education maintains its commitment to provide educational choices to families to meet the diverse needs of all students. The district’s Open Enrollment School of Choice (SOC) Policy (5116.1) is regulated by space availability.

The following schools are capped for the 2016-17 school year due to enrollment being at capacity:  El Camino High School, King Middle School, Ivey Ranch and Foussat Elementary Schools.  Only those applicants eligible for priority “C” (sibling), “D” (feeder pattern), or “E” (parent/guardian is an OUSD employee at requested site) will be allowed to apply for these capped schools.

Green Zone applications will only be available at the Educational Support Services Office at 2080 Mission Ave in Oceanside.

  • If your child is currently on a SOC and will remain at the same school next year—there is no need to reapply.
  • If your child is currently in entering kindergarten, 6th or 9th grade, you need to apply for a SOC for the 2016-17 school year if you want your child to attend a school other than their school of residence.
  • Only applications received during Green Zone will be considered in the first round lottery process for School of Choice placement.  This is not a first come, first served arrangement… all applications date stamped within Green Zone are given the same consideration within their priority categories.
  • NO e-mails or faxes will be accepted.
  • Two forms of address verification must be presented with the application. Acceptable proofs of address are current utility bills, cable bill, rental agreement or mortgage statement.  If these forms of verification are not in your name, a completed Shared Residency form will be required.
  • Parents will be notified by the last school day in May through U.S. Mail that their application has been approved, denied, or placed on a wait list.  Please do not call to check on the progress of your application before that time, as answering these calls takes away from our time to process applications.
  • Transportation is not provided for any student approved for School Of Choice.

For questions or concerns regarding SOC, please contact:

Smarter Balance state assessments

computer testing.jpgAttention all 3rd, 4th & 5th grade parents, when we return from spring break we will begin the administration of the Smarter Balance assessments.  This is the new California state assessment that is completely computer-based.  This new form of testing will look very different than the traditional pencil and paper standardized tests taken in the past.  These new on-line tests are aligned with the Common Core State Standards, which aim to encourage critical thinking, analytical writing, and real-world problem solving.  The new tests contain fewer multiple choice questions and more open-ended questions designed to draw responses that demonstrate a deeper understanding of key concepts learned.

Sleep--Are Your Children Getting Enough?

Kid sleeping.jpgAs parents, we know all too well how our own sleep affects our mood and ability to concentrate.  Because children are still growing, they depend on sleep even more than we do, for their physical and emotional health.  A recent study published in Pediatrics found that elementary-school children who went to sleep earlier were more emotionally stable and alert in class than those who went to bed later. During one week of school, half the students were put to bed earlier than normal, averaging about 27 minutes more sleep a night. The other half stayed up later than their routine bedtime, losing about 54 minutes of shut-eye each evening. Teachers then rated children's behavior, not knowing which children got more or less sleep. Students who were sleep-deprived not only seemed overly tired, but were more impulsive and irritable than their well-rested classmates. They were quick to cry, lose their tempers or get frustrated.

All children have different sleep needs, but if your child seems overly emotional, irritable, or unfocused, try putting him or her to bed an hour earlier.  Winding down for the hour before bedtime also helps them to fall asleep more quickly.  TV, computer screens, and phones, have been shown to delay sleep, so encourage quiet play, reading, and listening to music.  Following are the recommended hours of sleep from webmd.com, a reputable medical database recommended by physicans.

5-6 year olds:  10-12 hours of sleep

7-12 year olds: 10-11 hours of sleep

Earlier bedtimes for children mean more wind down time for parents, so your sleep and emotional wellbeing may improve too!

Play First, Then Eat Lunch

recess.pngFoussat has implemented a new lunch schedule.  This new schedule has the students go out to play first then coming in to eat lunch.  Too often we see students rush through their lunch barely eating anything or nothing at all because they are in a hurry to get out to the playground.  By going out to play first, we hope to accomplish 2 main things.  First, we hope that the students will eat more of their school lunch.jpglunch because they will not be anxious about getting out to the playground.  The other goal is to have students return to the classroom in a calmer, less agitated state.  Initial feedback tells us we are accomplishing both of these goals.

Kindergarten Lunch/Almuerzo para Kínder

school lunch.jpgKindergarten parents, did you know that the school lunch is available for your child, not only on Wednesdays, but every day of the week.  If they qualify for the Free Lunch Program or if you pay for their lunch, the student can eat a nutritious meal every day.  With the morning Kindergarten students, you can bring your child to the lunch room after you pick them up from the classroom.  For afternoon students, you can bring them a little early before their class starts and have them eat lunch.  Please call the school for more information or if you have questions.
